My Takes

Just my humble opinion…

Selfish Christians

Is there such a thing as a Selfish Christian? Isn’t that an example of an oxymoron?  I think it is.  You see, to me a Christian is one who not only follows Christ but also his teachings.  A Christian is then supposed to share their faith with others so they can also become a part of God’s family.  So in reality, we cannot be selfish and call ourselves Christians.  Right? For my blog’s sake, we’ll pretend it’s an acceptable term.

Now we, as professed Christians, (not all of us, mind you), attend church regularly, quote relevant scriptures and even pray fervently.  Unfortunately, this is where the buck stops for us.  Outside the church, our lives do not mirror our beliefs.  Some of us are hesitant to upset the apple cart or lose our ‘coolness’ by professing our faith,  hence our Facebook statuses, for example, are more apt to glorify us rather than God.  (Speaking of Facebook, what an awesome tool to spread the word! Too bad we never seek to take full advantage of it).

It is becoming increasingly difficult to differentiate between us and non-believers.  (Sobering thought).  We engage in the same things as they do, speak the same language, read the same books and watch the same movies.  In fact, some of us might even deny knowing HIM if it came down to peer pressure.

Seriously folks, let’s take a second to look deep into ourselves.  Are we Christians or are we Selfish Beings?  Do we smile often as though we are exuding God’s light? Do we try to spread the word? Let others know about our faith? Do we rather post a status on Facebook about what we are doing in our life instead of what God is doing in it? Do we make ourselves approachable by everyone so they can talk to us about God? Do we volunteer our time and resources to the less fortunate? Here comes the big one…DO WE LOVE OUR NEIGHBORS AS WE LOVE OURSELVES?

These are only a few of the questions that we should ask ourselves.  I admit, I am failing.  Are you?  What are we going to do about it?  I know what I am going to do…

Just my take.
