Herman Cain, Again

Herman Cain, Presidential Candidate

Ok,  here’s a piece of advice for today, if you are contemplating running for president or senator or any high ranking position for that matter, please make sure you have no skeletons in your closet and your past is not checkered.  If you are thinking that you were smart and didn’t leave a trail in any of your shenanigans, think again.  Did it involve more than just one person, namely you? Then if so, your tracks are not covered.  Money talks and even your mom may sell you out for the right price.

Mr. Herman Cain, what’s the matter with you, Sir?  I went easy on you on the sexual allegation charges.  I know campaigning brings out a lot of false accusers dug up by the opposing parties. I gave you the benefit of the doubt.  Now I am finding out that you have been carrying on an long time affair until as recent as last September?  Did you not think she will talk? What made you want to stick your dirty nose out in the public while you had snot in it?  A temporary case of amnesia?

You are not yet a president but yet you are already trying to pull the wool over the eyes of the American people AND thinking that you can get away with misrepresenting yourself.

Sir, your behavior is despicable! Please do everyone a favor and drop out of the race before you tarnish it any further.  I wish you the best in your single life.  What single life? Yours of course.  Your wife is taking her half and walking.

Just kidding, or maybe I am not. Just my take

The weird world of sports

IMG_8176.jpg

As a big Hockey fan and an even bigger fan of the Washington Capitals, it was interesting to note the firing of their head coach Bruce Boudreau, this morning.  The same guy who just only a few years ago, was good enough to best the other coaches and win the Coach Of The Year Award. The same coach who with his last win a couple of games ago, became the fastest coach in NHL history to reach 200 wins. (201-88-40).  So we can bet our houses that he would be picked up within 24 hours by some lucky team.

Apparently, Boudreau  had lost the support of his team. Whatever he did was not working, so unfortunately, he was the fall guy as all coaches are when their teams are failing. I am not sure why this is so.  If a student continually fails to live up to his or her potential, the teacher is never in any danger of losing his or her job.  Even though in some cases, the level of tutoring provided at schools are surely reasons for some heads to roll in that department…but that’s another take.

In a league, and also a world, where athletes are extremely overpaid, I think holding same athletes to some responsibility for their performances would not be a bad thing.  Why should the peon have to pay because an overpaid athlete suddenly thinks he’s too rich to give two hoots about playing up to his potential?   They are signed to these outrageous contracts that is not performance based, so why should they risk their health when they could just coast and still pick up their fat pay cheques?  I still say ALL athletes should be paid based on how they perform.  This means that their contract should be reviewed each season and made to reflect their play.

Personally, I also think it is preposterous that someone playing a sport gets paid in the hundreds of millions.  Their job, if one can call it that, does not cure cancer or any ailment for that matter.  Unlike an educator’s, it also does not shape a child to become the next president, scientist or doctor.  In a normal world, a doctor and teacher would probably be high up on the pay scale, enjoying the respect that their careers should garner.  Unfortunately, we are not living in such a world so we will continue to watch a rich brat running up a down a hardwood floor while bouncing a ball, complaining to the ref whenever another rich brat invade his personal space. What a picture!

The Time To Be Happy Is Now

Happiness, though seemingly elusive, is easier and closer than we think but as humans, we can’t see the forest for the trees…Here’s a take on how easy it is for one to be happy.

  • The Secret of Happiness

The key to happiness is to appreciate what you have. If it’s so simple, why are so many people unhappy?

A young man with an unusually happy disposition once came to meet me in Jerusalem. I asked him, “What’s your secret?”

He told me, “When I was 11 years old, God gave me a gift of happiness. I was riding my bicycle when a strong gust of wind blew me onto the ground into the path of an oncoming truck. The truck ran over me and cut off my leg.

“As I lay there bleeding, I realized that I might have to live the rest of my life without a leg. How depressing! But then I realized that being depressed won’t get my leg back. So I decided right then and there not to waste my life despairing.

“When my parents arrived at the hospital they were shocked and grieving. I told them, ‘I’ve already adapted. Now you also have to get used to this.’

“Ever since then, I see my friends getting upset over little things: their bus came late, they got a bad grade on a test, somebody insulted them. But I just enjoy life.”

At age 11, this young man attained the clarity that it is a waste of energy to focus on what you are missing, and that the key to happiness is to take pleasure in what you have. Sounds simple, doesn’t it? So why are so many people unhappy?

Happiness Is a State of Mind

People often think happiness is based on what you achieve and acquire. My whole life would improve if I had a new car…
I just need a better job and then I can relax and be happy…
If only I met the right girl…

You get the car and what happens? For a whole week you’re walking on air. Then you go right back to being unhappy.

Happiness comes from mastering the art of appreciating.

Happiness is not a happening; it’s a state of mind. You can have everything in the world and still be miserable. Or you can have relatively little and feel unbounded joy.

As the Talmud says, “Who is rich? The one who appreciates what he has” (Ethics of the Fathers, 4:1).

That’s why the morning prayers begin with a series of blessings thanking God for the simple and obvious:

Thank you, God, for giving me life Thank God I can see, that I can use my hands and feet, that I can think.

Happiness comes from mastering the art of appreciating and consciously enjoying what you already have.

On the Ledge

Imagine you are standing on the 70th floor of the Empire State Building, gazing at the cityscape. Suddenly a rather large man brusquely pushes past you, wrenches the window open and announces his intention to jump.

You yell out, “Stop! Don’t do it!”

The six-foot-five figure turns to you and menacingly says, “Try to stop me and I’ll take you with me!”

“Umm… No problem, sir. Have a safe trip. Any last words?”

“Let me tell you my troubles,” he says. “My wife left me, my kids won’t talk to me, I lost my job and my pet turtle died. So why should I go on living?”

Suddenly you have a flash of inspiration.

“Sir, close your eyes for a minute and imagine that you are blind. No colors, no sights of children playing, no fields of flowers, no sunset. Now imagine that suddenly there’s a miracle. You open your eyes and your vision is restored! Are you going to jump? Or will you stick around for a week to enjoy the sights?”

“I’ll stay for a week.”

“But what happened to all the troubles?”

“I guess they’re not so bad. I can see!”

“Well your eyesight is worth at least five million dollars. You’re a rich man!”

“Your eyesight is worth at least five million dollars. You’re a rich man!”

If you really appreciate your eyesight, the other pains are insignificant. But if you take it all for granted, then nothing in life will ever truly give you joy.

Misconceptions on the Road to Happiness

Misconception #1: “Once I know the tools for being happy, then it will work like magic.”

Don’t expect the results to come automatically. It is possible to understand how to attain happiness, yet not put it into practice. In fact, many people actually prefer to be comfortable and unhappy, rather than endure the discomfort of changing their habits.

Just as learning any new skill requires effort, you have to be willing to invest serious effort to achieve real happiness.

Misconception #2: “If I become content and satisfied with what I have, I’ll lose my motivation to achieve more.”

Happiness doesn’t drain your energy. It adds more!

Ask a happy person: “I have a boat. Do you want to go fishing?”

“Great! Let’s go!”

Now ask someone who is depressed, “C’mon, let’s go fishing!”

“I’m tired. Maybe tomorrow. And anyway, it might rain…”

Happy people are energetic and ambitious. There’s never enough time to do everything they want to do.

Misconception #3: If I want to be depressed, that’s my own prerogative.

A beautiful Sunday afternoon. You’re in the park having a picnic with friends. Suddenly the air is pierced by one person complaining: “Who forgot the forks? It’s too hot for volleyball. I want to go home already.”

When our mood negatively affects others, we recognize we have an obligation to be happy and not spoil the fun. That’s why we try to put on a happy face when we’re at a party.

But what about when we’re at home with our spouse and kids? Or when we trudge into the office on Monday morning?

Like an open pit in the middle of the road, a sourpuss is a public menace. Being happy is part of being considerate to the people around us.

Happiness Exercises

These exercises will increase your gratitude and help you build a solid foundation for a lifetime of happiness:

a. The Daily Pleasure Count

To increase your appreciation of life, pinpoint some things you are extremely grateful for and count them every morning for one month, e.g.: your eyes, your hands, your children, your cat.

Set aside a few minutes each day to contemplate these pleasures and feel gratitude for them.

To really drive this home, sit down with your spouse or friend every evening and discuss one pleasure that each of you had that day. At the very least, you’ll have a happier spouse or roommate! You can incorporate this into your family routine so that your children will also learn to appreciate their daily pleasures.

b. One-Hour Blessing-Fest

The next exercise is more challenging.

Spend one hour writing down everything for which you are grateful.

Most people fly through the first 15 minutes. The next 15 minutes the pen moves more slowly. The next 15 minutes get even tougher, but you can pull through if you include your eyebrows and socks…

The last 15 minutes are excruciating.

Once the list is compiled, add one new blessing each day.

The power of this exercise is clear: You must be conscious of all your blessings in order to appreciate whatever new blessings come your way.

c. Prioritize Your Blessings

To become a real expert at appreciation, prioritize your list. Which is more valuable: your hands or your feet? Eyes or ears? Sense of taste or your sense of touch?

Comparing pleasures forces you to articulate the subtle aspects of each one.

Another Anthem Flub

Former Idol, and one of my favorites from her season, Lauren Alaina, is in the news for all the wrong reasons.  She succumbed to her nerves and flubbed a line of the National Anthem.  Criticisms were fast and furious.  From her appearance to her sexuality.  Some had not the faintest relevance to the incident.

As a performer myself, I know the jitters can be over powering when performing in front of a large audience or any audience for that matter. I cannot count how many times I have forgotten the lyrics to songs.  To make matters worst, they were songs I wrote.  Lauren is only 17 years old and showed remarkable composure in the way she righted the ship and sailed on bravely.  By the end of the song, one could almost forget the slip-up.  Kudos Lauren!

On the matter of Celebrities singing the National Anthem, is it really necessary?  Why can’t everyone  stand and sing it together with pride?  This will also help to eliminate future Anthem flubs.

Whopping Whopper Price!

A Burger King hamburger sesame seed bun, as se...

Am I so out of the loop that I don’t know the price of one of my favorite burgers?  Today, someone wanted me to pick up a whopper with cheese for them at Burger King.  They asked how much money it would cost and I said no more than $5.  Was I ever wrong!  At the drive through window, I was told that my total came up to $6.04.  My incredulous response was to ask if it was just for the Burger.  I thought that she had misheard my order. No, she repeated it and it was what it was.  Wow! A fricking burger without fries or drink selling for over $6?  Has BK turned into a fine diner?  That’s just unacceptable.  And also my take.

Late Great 8, Ovechkin

Alex Ovechkin, warmups.

Last night, I attended the Washington Capitals‘ first game against the new Winnipeg Jets.  I was excited to see my main man Ovechkin although he has not been his old self of late.  The powerful Caps were manhandled to the tune of 4-1 by the lowly Jets.  As for Ovechkin, he looked like a tired shell with no resemblance to the guy whose game I adored.

This brings me sadly to think, Is the Great 8 done?  Is it the coaching? Has he lost his passion or just burned out from his first couple years of high-octane play? It’s unfortunate but I think he is actually done. I hope not but it’s my take on this…

Soccer balls ban in Toronto school

A soccer/football ball.

Let me add my take here before I let you read it for yourself.  So apparently, a parent suffered a concussion while at a school, after being hit in the head by a soccer ball.  The school’s administration reacted over reacted by banning all soccer balls from said school.  Yes, soccer balls that kids play with.  Isn’t that going a bit overboard?  I for one is getting tired of all these quick band aid solutions to everything lately.  Instead of using this to teach the kids about playing safely, they confiscated their ball?  Should parents stop attending hockey games now or should they just stop using hard rubber as pucks? I’m done.  Read it all here.

Lindsay Lohan yet again.

This mugshot is found from http://www.perezhil...

*Yawn* So here we go again..same old, same old…

LYNWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Lindsay Lohan was released from a Los Angeles County jail early Monday, less than five hours after she arrived at the crowded women’s lockup to serve a 30-day sentence for violating probation.

The “Mean Girls” actress was booked into the Century Regional Detention facility in Lynwood at 8:48 p.m. Sunday, in what was expected to be a short stay because of jail overcrowding.

She was released at 1:35 a.m., county sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore said.

News crews staking out the jail said she left in a black Cadillac Escalade sport utility vehicle, and that she was in her Venice home by 2 a.m.

Lohan did not get any favors, Whitmore said.

“She’s treated like every other inmate who has gone through similar circumstances,” he said.

Lohan had until Nov. 9 to report to the jail.

It’s Lohan’s fifth jail sentence since being arrested twice for drunken driving in 2007.

I gave up. Nothing else to say on this matter…

Sexual Harassment Charges

Sexual harassment

Sexual harassment is a crime, yet too many victims see fit to wait until the perpetrator is running for an important office, say President, before coming forward and pointing the accusing finger,  usually with a high-profile lawyer in tow.  I take any form of sexual crimes seriously and sympathize with the victims.  I however, can’t help but question their credibility and motives when they come out of the woodwork after years of being silent.

Noteworthy is Republican Presidential candidate, Herman Cain.  He was riding a tide of popularity until a couple of women came forward to state that he had acted inappropriately towards them back in the 1990s.  Apparently, their case was settled and that was that. (Not sure if money changed hands).

In a way, this could be taken as the women doing their part to make sure the electorate know that the person they are voting for has got skeletons in their closet, even if this may or may not take away from their effectiveness in doing their job.

My take.

Unanswered Prayers

Ever wondered why your prayers seem to go unanswered?  I have.  Well until a few years ago when I realized that my prayers were sounding more like a ‘want ads’ than prayer requests.  ‘God please give me this. Let me get that. I want you to do this.’  Do our kids get everything they ask for? Of course not.  So why do we expect our prayers to always get answered the way we want them to and when we want them to?

When a loved one is sick, our prayers are usually for them to be healed. We pray for the hungry to be fed, the dying to get life, and basically for all wrong things to be righted.  If we stop to think, what would the world be like if all these prayer requests were answered?  We often get disillusioned when we practiced our faith, lived by the bible and yet have our prayers go unanswered.  “Why Lord? Why?  Why is Mr. Johnson blessed with all his wealth and seemingly happy family yet he doesn’t even believe in you?  I believe in you.  I do what you want me to do, yet you ignore my prayers. What kind of message are you sending?  How would I look to the unbelievers?”

Reading the Lord’s Prayer, there is a line that says ‘Your will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven’.  Now what I gather from this is that everything is done according to God’s will. Not yours, not mine. We can pray until we are blue in the face. So a few years ago, I learned this and now my prayers are more like ‘Oh Lord, I want to bring you so-and-so for prayer.  I pray Lord that you will bring her comfort to accept whatever you have in store for him/her.  Lord I pray for the family that they too will be strong and accept that it is your will..“  Whatever the issue, my prayer is always for me or whoever is in my prayer, to understand what they are going through and find comfort and strength to cope with whatever comes. When I do pray for a healing, I pray that God will provide  healing if it be his will.

Mary Magdalene, in a dramatic 19th-century pop...

Two weeks ago, I lost my book of poems in which I had poems I had written since I was 15 years old. I was devastated.  I looked everywhere. Literally EVERYWHERE.  One day I made the decision to stop looking, or at least not look so hard.  I then said a prayer to God. I said ‘Oh God, you know how important this is to me but there are much more important things and dire needs in the world. If it is your will God, please let it turn up sometime. If not, let me be able to let it go’.  Well a few days later, I was preparing to go and sing for some residents at a Nursing home.  For some reason, I kept having this unshakeable feeling that I should take one of my tracks and do a song for them. I tried to explain myself out of doing it as I didn’t want to go down to the basement and look through my music.  Finally, I said ok and went to find an appropriate song.  While walking to the shelf where I had my cds, I happened to look at a box in the corner that I had searched at least 3 times in the last week trying to find my book of poems.  I saw something sticking out at the side and identified it for what it was. MY BOOK OF POEMS!  Thank you God! You came through for me!

This may seem as a very trivial matter to go to HIM for.  Don’t forget all I did was pray for an intervention because I didn’t want to waste my time looking for my book as I was very consumed with finding it.  HE found in him to grant me that request even though I would have been satisfied with whatever the outcome.  The thing is, once is left in his feet or in his hands, I try to let it go and go on with life.

Here’s one of my favorite prayers.  The serenity prayer.

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next. Amen.

Bear in mind that I am not a qualified bible scholar.  This is just my take on praying.
