My Takes

Just my humble opinion…

That Darn Basement!

Amie’s work of art. She designed this entertainment center.

Amie and I have lost our DIY mojo.  At least as far as the basement project is concerned.  We did do what we set out to do but in the end, we limped over the finish line.  We didn’t go with Geico but we sure did save a bundle.

We started this project with a lot of gusto and expectations.  (Noticed how at first it was ‘man-cave’ now it’s the darn basement?).  We were wide-eyed and bushy-tailed.  In the end, we were just happy to see it over and done.  Believe me, it was lots of work!  (So you still want to build?). 12 and 13 hour days weren’t exactly fun.  Especially not with kids and full-time jobs.

It was hardly a labor of love but fortunately, we never really argued during our stressful times.  I was a bit grumpy at time and I think that’s why Amie allowed me to go to Vegas.  It was more for de-stressing than anything else.  We gained some valuable insight and experience and Amie was able to let her creative juices flow unbridled.

I installed ceiling lights and speakers for a nice wireless look

For the finishing, I installed pot lights and ceiling surround speakers while Amie and her dad installed laminate flooring in the bedrooms.  They did a good job.

Next Wednesday, the last major job gets done.  We are getting carpets installed in the family room and hallway.  That would complete the project.  Amie wanted to try her hand at it but after hearing what was involved, she agreed to call in the pros.  There are some other little stuff left to finish, like the couple of pot lights hanging out of the ceiling in one of the bedrooms and the partially painted entertainment center but both of us have been avoiding the basement like the plague.  We are pooped.
