My Takes

It's Just My Take

Oh No Canada!

Image result for Oh CanadaI am prepared to receive some backlash for this but it is just MY TAKE.

Last Wednesday, our Senate passed a bill that would see the line in the national anthem changed from “in all thy sons command” to “in all of us command.”

Now please don’t get me wrong, I am all for inclusivity and equal rights. As a minority I know the uphill battles we face, but seriously? Is that the best we could do? Deploying resources and time into something as trivial as this? Yes, considering the more pressing issues we have that need our government’s attention, I would say this is trivial and maybe just a diversion tactic.

Aboriginal women are murdered or go missing at an alarming rate, and have been this way for years. They are women too. Where are their inclusion? Why no proper or serious inquiry?

When I proudly listen to the anthem, I never got the feeling that the word ‘sons’ referred only to us men. The same way I never thought that the second paragraph of the American declaration of independence stating that ‘all men are created equal’ spoke only to men. Maybe because I had bigger stuff on my mind.

Should I now expect to see a bill to remove ‘God’ from the anthem because it infringes on the rights of atheists? How about the word ‘native?’, is that politically correct?  We could go on and on but you see, that would be detracting from real-life issues.

  1. Saw this on Facebook and I was thinking the same thing. What a waste of time and effort on something so trivial. There are so many more important issues that need addressing!
