Let Love Trump Hate

us-election-night-2016It’s been a couple of days since the most memorable election in the US.  An election that saw more than its share of mud slinging by both candidates and some allegations and revelations that made choosing either of the candidates a choice between the lesser of two evils.

America spoke and Donald Trump is now the President elect of the United States.  Say what you may but he won it honestly.  (Unless there’s something I don’t know).  It’s no use getting mad that he won, majority rules and the system is the system.  And that’s why Trump deserves a chance.

Yes, he said and did some dumb things on his path to the White House but that was his strategy and it worked!  Trump lacks a political portfolio hence he needed to capture attention by any other means necessary.  He did that well.  Too well.

I am usually the pessimistic one but I seriously think that Trump just might surprise a few of the naysayers.  Now that he is faced with the reality of being the top dog, I think we would see a different Donald Trump.  Heck, he has already back pedalled on his promise to repeal the Obamacare as his first act.  See? The man just might be what America needs.  (If not, there’s always impeachment).

The media is doing a great job once again! Yes, a great job of spreading fear and hate with all the negative coverage.  A single stupid act committed by some bored idiot gets front page news as a hate crime due to Trump being elected.  This need to stop. America needs to come to grips with the results of the election and give the man a chance to prove himself.  He is not a wall builder until he actually builds a wall.

Politicians are known to say one thing and do the other. If this holds true, then Trump might just be fine after all.  Let’s wait and see…

Who’s Holding The Trump Card?

If you follow NHL hockey you would have heard about John Scott, the goon-turned-all-star.  After an online campaign, fans voted for Scott, who had just 5 goals and 1 assist in his career, to be the captain of the Pacific division team.  Yes, it was a joke.  The NHL in its embarrassment, tried everything they could to ‘right’ this ‘wrong’.  They had him traded from his Phoenix team to Montreal, hoping to make him ineligible since he would be a different division.   He was even sent down to the minors!  It didn’t work.  A win is a win and Scott had won legitimately, it didn’t matter his credentials. At the All Star game, Scott scored 2 goals and won not only the MVP but over 90 thousand dollars.  No one saw that coming.

Donald Trump’s Presidential  run mirrors the above.  I am sure everyone thought it was a joke  No one really thought The Donald had a chance.  He had nothing in his portfolio to suggest it was anything but a joke.  In fact, Trump claimed that he knew nothing about politics.  Well the joke’s on America.  Trump has rolled down the Republican hill as a small snow flake but has now grown into a huge snow ball and gaining momentum!  Trump is for real!  You can see it coming.  The Republicans, like the NHL, are seeking ways on how to quietly end this  embarrassment, but could they?  Is it too late?  The people have spoken?

The fact that the KKK and other white supremacists groups pledged allegiance to Trump speaks volumes as to the type of person he is and what he is about.  Not that anyone needed proof, his tweets and loose tongue already revealed such.  Trump, in his honest defense, claimed that he knows nothing about white supremacists or the KKK when asked about the endorsements.  He just doesn’t know.  I doubt he knows that his wives are immigrants.  If he did he might think twice about his stance on immigrants.

It seems like what Trump wants, Trump gets  because the more he fumbles and bungles his way through his campaigns, spewing hate, sexism, racism and taking cheap and immature shots at anyone who dares to oppose him, the more popular he gets!  He is contradictory and barely knows what goes on outside his personal space.

A man who refuses to make his tax returns public and declared “I try to pay as little tax as possible,” is the forerunner in race for President.  There was never a better time for Americans to seek God’s blesssing.  From Obama to this?

Unlike Donald Trump, John Scott is a good man who deserved the good things  he go.   Sorry for the comparison, Mr. Scott.

Exercise Your Right, Vote!

Canadians are gearing up to vote for the candidate who is best suited to run the country.  In their opinion.  It’s a difficult process and sometimes, much like choosing your poison.  Many of us would rather not choose our poison, thanks to those candidates who make big promises that they never fill, but as bad as these men and women might be, someone has to run the country and no matter how hard we try, we would never find one that’s perfect.

No vote is a bad vote except a ‘no vote’.  Don’t feel inclined or pressured to vote based on who your friends are voting for or who the ads tell you to vote for.  Vote for the person YOU think would be the least to renege on their promises, the one who addresses the issues that you need addressed.  Economy? Healthcare? Child Benefits?  What you hold dear is not necessarily what everyone holds dear.  Research if you are not sure.

If you listen to the media and even family and friends, you would be hard-pressed to find a suitable party.  Trudeau is too young, Mulcair’s party is in disarray, Harper is for the rich, etc.  So who is left?

Maybe they are all the same, or maybe not.  Maybe the one who was NOT the same lost because YOU didn’t vote.  Get out there and vote! It’s your right.

Sports Is Not All Sports For Some

Qatar World Cup 2022

Last weekend, after watching Germany beat Argentina to take the World Cup, I found out something very disturbing.  Did you know that the 2022 World Cup would be hosted by Qatar? Don’t worry, my wife had never heard of the place until I told her.  There is some speculation that one of the big honchos of FIFA actually spent millions in bribes to get Qatar to host it as he’s from there.  Totally expected.  It’s sports, it’s corrupt as a two-headed coin.  But that’s not what disturbed me.

What disturbed me was hearing that over 900 people had already died building infrastructure for this highly-coveted game.  900! Hey, and that’s since 2012! The International Trade Union Confederation estimated that at least 4000 will die before kickoff.  Nice! All for what?  I know that deaths on construction sites are facts of life but when it’s actually factored in like the rising price of steel, that’s unnerving.   In comparison, only about 15 workers died preparing Brazil to host this past World Cup, also, only 25 died preparing Sochi for Summer Olympics. Only. That’s how it was reported. Only. Isn’t one lost life already one too many?

So next time we sit down to watch Olympics and the World Cup and see so many happy people having fun, maybe we should take a minute to reflect on the lost lives that made it possible.  About Qatar, maybe we should voice our concerns in various media and bring this to light.  Is it really worth it?  Is it worth dying, or killing for?

Rob Ford’s No Wolf In Sheep’s Clothing

world_08_temp-1384602621-52875bfd-620x348One would never thing that ‘right thing’ and Rob Ford would ever be used in the same sentence but here it is. I guess there’s always some ‘right thing’ in even the worst of us.

Yesterday, during City Council meeting, there was a moment where the members were patting themselves on the back for a job well done in terms of hosting a successful World Pride Day Parade in Toronto. Apparently everyone stood up and applaud the announcement.  Well all except Rob Ford.  Krystyn Wong-Tam, the only openly gay member took to the dais as the key catalyst for World Pride, members again stood to applaud. Again Mr. Ford stayed in his seat, drinking his coffee as though he was sitting on his deck enjoying the dog days of Summer.

As you would imagine, the dike broke soon after. (No pun). Rob was asked if he was homophobic, which he vehemently denied. Now this blog is not about whether Ford is or is not homophobic, it’s about a man doing what he thinks is the right thing.  Krystyn Wong-Tam considered the ‘sitting out’ a snub and said he could have ‘at least faked it.’  To that I say ‘no he should not have’.

See, that’s the thing with our society these days. We fake it.  We fake being true friends, we fake being family, we fake love. It’s time we wear our true colors so everyone could see what and who we really are.  Time we stay in our seats and be ourselves instead of standing up and being a Judas.  I am not a fan of Mr. Ford but I still have to respect the man for doing the right thing by sitting this one out. At least we know who he is and what he stands or sits for.

And again, that’s My Take

What Ever Happened To Not Negotiating With Terrorists?

Tell me that the President of the United States Of America, a country that pledged to eradicate terrorism without compromise, did not just release 5 jailed terrorists in a trade for a US Army deserter.  Never mind, it’s true, he did.  The President even went as far as to sheepishly admit that the released terrorists could possibly take up arms against the US again.  He also defended this highly questionable move as sticking with the rule that no US soldier would be left in enemy hands.  He was there for 5 years so is this a new rule? It didn’t matter if said soldier was a reluctant US soldier in the first place, whose alleged cowardly act may have cost the lives of his fellow soldiers.  That’s five giant steps backwards on the war on terror.  I meant, the ‘supposed’ war on terror.

I was of the opinion that America had a hard-line stance against terrorism.  No negotiating with terrorists.  Setting dangerous terrorists free to secure the freedom of an accused deserter is negotiating with terrorists, isn’t it? A horrible and dangerous negotiation but one just the same. What’s this? Catch-and-release?

Now the big debate is, was this a good move? Would it set a dangerous precedent? Well not really a precedent since the US is known for aligning itself with terrorists for years. You mean all these bad guys have to do is catch a soldier then bargain for the release of a few of theirs?  Or should I say, “negotiate for their release?’  If this is so, then the so-called war on terror is already lost.  News gets around.  Ever heard of ‘taking one for the team’?  How about the saying that you have to break a few eggs to make an omelet?  Remember Hiroshima? Blanket bombings in Afghanistan and Iraq? How many ‘eggs’ were broken to smoke out the bad guys?  The innocents took one for the team. Bowe could/should have taken one for the team.

How about Bowe’s family?  How would I feel if my brother/son was in that position

Just for the records, the enthusiasm expressed by the Obama Administration after orchestrating this trade-off was not shared by many of those who served with the captured American soldier, Bowe Bergdahl in Afghanistan.  According to some, his desertion cost the lives of other soldiers who died while looking for him after he left his post without permission.  Some are even calling for him to be charged.  If this is true, then it cast an even darker shadow on this whole deal.

Hey Obama, while you have your negotiating hat on and wheeling and dealing with terrorists, do you think you could maybe talk to Boko Haram about releasing the captured school girls?   And  please don’t offer him guns for a trade-off.

Mayor Behaving Badly

There’s a saying that it is better to keep your mouth shut and be thought to be on crack than to open it and remove all doubts.  Or something like that.  Apparently, Toronto’s Mayor Rob Ford has never heard that saying.

After being bombarded all last week by news that Rob Ford, the mayor of Toronto, was caught on video using crack, I had enough.  I had to educate myself so I could at least know the basics of the case.  After all, Torontonians were demanding that he step down as Mayor.  People the world over were weighing in.

I found out that Mr. Rob Ford was no saint.  He had run-ins with the law on a few occasions, once even getting arrested for DUI and marijuana possession in the USA. And that’s before he was elected as Mayor.  At an NHL game, Ford who was alleged to be visibly drunk, was belligerent to the point of insulting fans at the game.  He had to be escorted out by security.  He later denied that he was even at the game.  That was BEFORE he was elected!

After Rob Ford was elected, his antics followed him.  He was accused of inappropriately touching a former female Mayoralty candidate and making inappropriate comments.  At the time, he was suspected of being ‘under the influence of cocaine’.  At a festival in August of this year, the cracked Mayor was filmed walking around apparently ‘out of it’.  He was later whisked away by city staff and police.  During all this, the threat that there was video-taped evidence of him using crack hovered over the Mayor’s head like a smoke halo. Last week, the threat became real.   Project Brazen 2, an investigation triggered by the reports of Rob Ford’s crack use, and conducted using air and land surveillance, revealed incriminating evidence of the Mayor meeting with a renowned drug dealer on numerous occasions.

As a councillor, Ford once said, “”What I compare bike lanes to is swimming with the sharks. Sooner or later you’re going to get bitten… Roads are built for buses, cars, and trucks, not for people on bikes. My heart bleeds for them when I hear someone gets killed, but it’s their own fault at the end of the day.” He also added, “It’s no secret, okay. The cyclists are a pain in the ass to the motorists.”  For these lovely comments, Ford was elected to be Toronto’s Major.

Despite all the alarming signs that Rob Ford should have been elected to go to the closest rehab facility, he was still voted to be the Mayor.  I mean a lot of politicians are either on drugs or act like it anyways, so what’s another crack head leader?  But if they voted him on when it was widely suspected that he had a drug and alcohol problem, why ask him to step down now it’s all but confirmed? Oh I got it, everyone deserves a chance, even poli-trick-tians.

Mayor Rob Ford maintains his innocence and claims it either wasn’t him or it is a set-up.  He is rebuffing all calls for him to resign saying, “I have no reason to resign.”  I see many reasons for him to resign and seek help immediately before his path of self-destruction leads to total destruction.

My Take.
